Personality: Asuka is a proud, playful grappler. She's always warm and friendly to her peers, and strives to be a voice of booming positivity for those who need it. She does enjoy a good exchanging of barbs, especially amongst friends and rivals.
History: Born the daughter of an engineer father and an athlete mother, Tomoko Nakano had an easy life ahead of her. Though she didn't look down on anyone from lower castes, nor did she wish for the cushy lifestyle of those born in the upper castes, Tomoko felt she had the best life in the world. Much time was spent with her mother, learning the most basic of taijutsu that a child of her age could.
A year before she was of age to join the shinobi academy, a pair of envoys from the Mizukage's office arrived at the Nakano house. She had been selected, amongst a handful of other candidates, to be the host of the two-tailed cat, Matatabi. Her father protested, her mother pleaded, but Tomoko stood forward and assured her parents that it would be okay. That she would be okay. "It's okay, mama. It's okay, papa." Tomoko spoke, a reassuring smile on her face. She punctuated her words with gentle eye contact. "I'm gonna be just fine!" Inside, she was petrified. Without even knowing the ramifications of what she had signed herself up for, Tomoko did not betray the soul-chilling fear that curdled in her stomach. But, her consent was all the men needed, and she was whisked away to parts unknown.
In the days leading up to enrollment, Tomoko couldn't remember much about what had happened to her. All she knew was, since then, she felt different somehow. She was still strong, no matter who dismissed her. She was still a good person, even despite how her neighbors scowled and grimaced at her. But she didn't feel like herself. She wasn't the same Tomoko. As her parents worked through enrollment paperwork, she approached and suggested a new name: "Asuka." It was the name she'd begun hearing in her head since that day she was chosen. Puzzled, but supportive of their daughter, the two parents agreed to enroll her under that name.
Throughout her academy schooling, Asuka was always told she'd have to kill somebody, one day. It made sense: today's friends might be tomorrow's enemies. What she was not prepared for, was how soon that would happen. She took to shinobi life incredibly quickly, no doubt in part due to her existing expertise and experience in body training and recreational sparring. Although she studied ninjutsu and chakra natures, it was taijutsu that called to Asuka, who dove headfirst into her graduation ceremony ready to put a hurting on her opponents. It was only then that the rules were made clear: survive, and kill one of your classmates, and you will graduate. Asuka was torn. On one hand, demanding such brutality of children towards other children sickened her. But, then, she heard the people. She heard the chattering of the audience, peered through the spotlights into a crowd of confused and afraid aspiring genin, festering and bubbling with anticipation until the first cry of rage exploded from within it.
Asuka watched as her peers became animals, where the social castes became that of predator and prey. Her gaze settled on a girl no more than a year younger than her, cowering before a boy who was becoming increasingly aware that he was much, much bigger than her. The girl was a sobbing, whimpering, trembling mess. Asuka stepped in between the two. "Let her be," Asuka ordered the bully. "She's already given up. Let her run the clock and fail, and go back to whatever waits at home for her." Unfazed, the bully reached for his knife and lunged at Asuka. She was too quick for him, grabbing him by the wrist and ripping him to the ground where she could gain better leverage to wrestle the knife from his grip and bend his arm opposite of where it should bend. The bully wailed and groaned, cursing and spitting and threatening. Asuka hooked his neck, pulled him into a rear naked chokehold, and squeezed until both his shallow gasps and frantic misguided punches faded into the growing blue and purple hues beginning to smear across the bully's face.
And, just like that, Asuka had taken her first life. By the end she had been regarded amongst the winners. The survivors. That little girl survived, too, but she did not win in the eyes of the proctors. She was sent home a winner of life, and the prize was what little innocence she could still fit in her pocket.
Somewhere deep inside of Asuka, a dark pit in her stomach was happy about what happened that day.
