History: There are so many minor conflicts, skirmishes, and battles in the Bloody Mist that Yoshitsune can't even remember which one it was that left him an orphan. He was only a child when he turned to a life of petty theft and odd jobs to provide food for himself and his younger sibling, Kokoro. Keeping a roof over their heads was even harder. The siblings often bounced around from place to place, hiding in the houses of absentee merchants or vacationing patricians. They were always eventually chased out, and Yoshitsune was frequently beaten. The offended parties were always quick to remind him that he was a freak, and that he was lucky to get off without a worse punishment. As a child Yoshitsune never understood why he and his sibling were so reviled by others, but he would never forget the day that he created shaved-ice for Kokoro. It just kind of happened, He was holding a cup of water, his little sibling was crying, and he wanted to cheer them up. He tried mimicking a few of the fancy hand-seals he had seen shinobi use - playing ninja, one of their favorite pastimes - and the water in the cup turned into a little pile of fluffy ice crystals. An onlooker pulled it from Kokoro's hands and tossed it on the ground. He remembers being kicked in the ribs over and over, and Kokoro crying even harder.
It was only later that Yoshitsune learned that he possessed a kekkei genkai, and that his fate had been determined from birth. A part of him had hoped that maybe, someday, he might escape the slums, the poverty, and the hatred to make some kind of comfortable life for himself and his sibling. It was only when he was older that he realized; money could help them escape the slums, escape poverty, but there was nothing he could do to change his blood. There would be people that always hated him for that. There were many times when he wanted to give up, when he felt too tired or too angry at the world to continue. And yet there was a deep part of himself, a spite that he did not even know he possessed, that encouraged him to continue to exist. Living, by itself, was a flagrant act of defiance against the people who wished that he simply didn't exist.
Eventually someone with authority over such things heard the story about the boy who turned water into ice, and Yoshitsune was enrolled against his will in the Academy to become a shinobi. It was nothing like the games he used to play with Kokoro. It was the worst period of his life, worse even than when he lived on the streets. He tries to forget most of it, but he'll never forget the screams on graduation day, when he was the last one left standing. He barely ate for two years afterwards, and Kokoro cared for him. It was this care and affection that eventually roused him to leave the house again, now a teenager. He made a bit of a name for himself over the next several years and earned a reputation as a maverick. His prodigious talent helped him complete missions and earn swift promotion, but his tendency to disobey orders earned him the ire of many higher-ups. Rumors suggest he has intentionally self-sabotaged on certain raid and skirmish missions, a theory potentially supported by his unusually high number of failed missions. However, his significantly higher portfolio of successful missions have made him a useful tool, at least for now. For his own part, Yoshitsune has taken his earnings and used them to buy an apartment for himself and Kokoro, and gives generously to a handful of charities.
